What is a Third House Meeting…and How Can You Get Involved?

March 2009

Have you ever wanted to sit face-to-face with your elected official and let them know how you really feel? You can! PPAI is asking supporters across the state to find out about Third House meetings in their districts and urging them to get involved.

The name "Third House" derives from the fact that state legislatures are generally divided into two chambers, or houses—the House of Representatives and the Senate. Meetings they hold in their districts are called "third house meetings."

Please write your local legislators and ask to be put on the list to receive information about these Third House meetings. You can find the House Democratic Caucus listing here, the House Republican Caucus listing here, the Senate Democrat listings here, and the Senate Republican listings here. We can help you find out who your legislator is here.

If you learn of a scheduled meeting, please alert us at advocates@ppin.org, so we can gather supporters to attend. We will also provide attending supporters with information to help prepare them prepare.

Also, in the coming months PPAI will be laying the groundwork to allow our supporters to organize their own personal meetings with their legislators and hold them accountable for the decisions they have made regarding reproductive rights and comprehensive health care for Hoosiers.

If this is something that interests you (even a little bit!), please contact amy.jacobson@ppin.org for more details. We hope to get the word out to as many of our representatives as possible that not only do we want Prevention First, we also want Indiana legislators to stop putting forward legislation that is harmful to women's health.
